1 Year Suomi Photography
Time flies and you`re the pilot.
I´m very happy to open today a good old wine and celebreate 1 year Suomi Photography.
How everything started:
Looking many, many, many year’s back, the first interest in photography came when I was thirteen or fourteen years old. If you were born in the seventies or earlier, you may still remember the camera obscura!
A camera obscura (Latin for “dark room”) is an optical device that led to photography and the photographic camera. The device consists of a box or room with a hole in one side. Light from an external scene passes through the hole and strikes a surface inside, where it is reproduced, inverted (thus upside-down), but with color and perspective preserved. The image can be projected onto paper, and can then be traced to produce a highly accurate representation.
We build our own camera obscura with a simple carton box.
In the back of the camera a simple photo paper – It’s then kept in complete darkness (Pinhole closed) until you are ready to make your picture. When you do, the light that comes into your cameras pinhole gets flipped, squashed, and projected onto the paper in the back of the camera. Exposure time was depending of the whole size and the light several minutes.
After the photo is taken, the pinhole closed, straight to the dark room. Then the chemical process starts… I still remember the not so nice smell of the chemicals, like rotten eggs 🙂
That time, photography was already an important part of my live. When I was sixteen, I got from my godmother a Minolta 7000 my first single lens reflex camera with autofocus 🙂
However, my professional career I focused to an education in the IT Business where I´m active, happy and making my money. During the education and also later, when I worked for a travel agent in the IT department, I had the opportunity to travel a lot. And yes, the camera was always, if not always with me.
Many of them I have used. And the funny part, some of them are still in a box. Full, rewound and ready to develop. For sure some time I will develop them and surprise my self 🙂
2001 I both my first Digital compact camera. A simple Canon Powershot 10.
That time I played Floorball in a club where nowadays, or since years, the women team is still one of the best in the world, called UHC Dietlikon. Our man`s team was not bad either, but we only played in the second and third highest league. Anyway, 2001 I had the opportunity to photograph all teams and players for the club homepage. Easy peasy lemon squeezy – I thought – and yes, I did my first experience as shadow photographer.
Without taking care of sunlight, shadow, reflection or flash – I just shoot and had fun. The name “shadow photographer” I have heard many times. “I have not failed, I just fond 100 ways that won’t work.”
First time in Finland.
My first visit in Finland was 2005, still with a compact camera in my pocket. That time it was a CASIO EX-S500. 5MP Digital Camera with 3x Anti Shake Optical Zoom. J Still a big step backwards since I had my Minolta 7000. But common, the digital revolution just started. Analog cameras are from yesterday….
Other trips to Finland, also to the Finnish Lapland and the final move to Finland in 2009, brought me out to the beautiful nature and I realized that my compact camera is exhausted, or simple on the limit with what a wanted to do.
And it continues in Finland.
My parents surprised me 2010. They gave me a Nikon D3100. I was the happiest man on earth. My first DSLR camera and everything started from the beginning. Things I knew already, but now it’s about time to understand it also. ISO, Aperture and Shutter speed, histograms, white balance, depth of field ,shutter release technique and and and…
In the followed years a captured over 20`000 pictures and some movies, generated 1 Terra Byte Data to my photo storage provider “smugmug” and it’s not stopping. If you want to test Smugmug, try it out by clicking here. https://secure.smugmug.com/signup?Coupon=TKocP4SIwXlHA
Suomi Photography domain.
In 2014 the name “photography” ended up to be a top-level-domain. I was fast enough and registered http://suomi.photgraphy to my name. Other domains, like suomiphotography.fi and suomiphotography.com followed later.
Trade Name / company registration
1 year later I registered the name Suomi Photography and Finland Photography in the Finnish Patent and Registration Office. My Official business ID I got 01.06.2015, exactly one year ago.
The Business is still a hobby of mine, but a lot of my free time I invest in future business ideas and plans. A photo studio set, a new Nikon camera, external speedlight flashes and super-fast lenses are part of my latest investments.
I would say, the old nickname; shadow-photographer is history since years. With my experience and new equipment I past the level, hobby-photographer and I´m learning every time when I´m out in the nature or studio, new technics and tricks.
First portrait photography sessions and a new way of doing landscape and night pictures are the latest learning. I´m looking forward to the great summer, new projects and ideas popping up here and there.
Thanks you for reading this short story and visiting my gallery and blog from time to time.
From Finland with Love.
